TOLLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS
STRATEGIC PLAN
The Tolland Public Schools Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Education at its November 28, 2012 meeting. The Strategic Plan incorporates the findings developed through the work of the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) and the Strategic Plan Steering Committee.
Those findings included the following six topic areas:
- Communication
- Technology
- 21st Century Learning Skills
- Parent/Community Engagement
- Student Learning/Curriculum
- School Environment
The Strategic Plan addresses each of these areas. The Plan includes specific strategies and actions:
- To ensure high levels of student achievement for each individual academically, socially, and emotionally in preparation for a 21st Century world.
- To establish a positive school climate where all members of the school community are safe, respected, and available for learning.
- To provide and utilize technology to promote learning.
- To facilitate consistent communication among Tolland Public Schools' stakeholders.
- To improve school facilities that support student achievement and provide a safe learning and working environment.

COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS
In June of 2010, the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governor’s Association, with monetary support from the Gates and Mott Foundations and the desire expressed through the Race to the Top initiative, released national curriculum standards for math, English language arts, and literacy standards for social studies, science and the technical subjects. All but five states have adopted these standards. These standards are now Connecticut’s Common Core State Standards (CCSSs).
In addition to the above, national science frameworks have been developed and standards are slated to be adopted and released in the fall. Social studies standards are also new and have already been developed for use by Connecticut.
