RackspaceTechnology Services in Tolland Schools

The Technology Services department has three duties:

          • to devise. administer, and evaluate plans, policies, and procedures to insure effective use and growth of technology district-wide;
          • to direct the purchase, installation, development, and maintenance of computers, software and technology tools in classrooms and administrative offices;
  • and, to train all teachers, students, and staff to use technology to maximum advantage in communicating, teaching, learning, and managing.

Accoringly, technology plays a vitally important role in Tolland’s schools. The district owns more than 1300 microcomputers, maintains a network that connects all classrooms, office, and buildings to each other and to the Internet. There are eighteen assorted servers distributed among five buildings in the district. Staff and students use technology to access resources for communication, personal productivity, learning, management, and administration. All aspects of teaching and learning in the district depend heavily upon technology and upon the Technology Services Department.

The District Director of Technology Services coordinates the program in conjunction with building and district administrators and the technology and curriculum planning committees in each of the schools. In addition to the District Director, the department includes two full-time staff members, a district Network Administrator and a district Computer Technical Specialist. Although members of the department share many duties, the Network Administrator is primarily responsible for maintaining LAN, WAN, intranet, and Internet connections, integrity, and quality and the Tech Specialist is primarily responsible for desktop hardware and software repairs and maintenance, along with end-user technical support and helpdesk.
